If you wish to carry out the installation yourself, it is important for best results that you prepare the ground properly prior to your turf being delivered. We hope you will find some of the pointers below useful.

Remove Existing Turf

Any existing turf should be removed by cutting under the grass with a spade. A turf stripping machine makes the task a lot easier and is available from most tool hire centres.
Soil Preparation

Soil needs to be turned over to a depth of approximately 75mm. This can be achieved by either digging over the area or using a rotovator. Compacted soil will not provide a good base for establishment. Ensure the area is free of any debris, stones, weeds or old turf.
Fertilize & Rake

Apply a general purpose fertiliser at the manufacturer's application rate. The ground should be raked over to produce a smooth surface to the topsoil incorporating the fertiliser. At this stage the ground may be lightly rolled or firmed by foot to reveal any soft areas. Repeat the raking process until the ground is evenly firm and smooth. A wide rake makes leveling easier. The ground should be firm but not compact. If you wish to match to the level of an existing lawn or edging, prepare the soil to be 10 mm below the finished height of the lawn.
